Rubio Reveals Exact Moment Trump Pursued Canada As 51st State
"You know how that came about?"

Rubio’s Trump revelation.
President Donald Trump has never been one to shy away from bold ideas or tough negotiations, and perhaps his most talked about foreign policy move so far is no exception. According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the conversation that set everything in motion for Canada potentially becoming the 51st state of the United States wasn’t some grand geopolitical strategy cooked up in a think tank—it was just Trump applying his signature common-sense approach to statecraft.
In his first interview as Secretary of State, Rubio chose to sit down with one of the best real and honest journalists in the business, independent journalist Catherine Herridge. This alone was an incredible moment, showing that the Trump administration is committed to real journalism, not the scripted soundbites pushed by the mainstream media. Herridge, who has consistently delivered fair, honest, and original reporting, took to X to express her gratitude:
"Thank you @SecRubio for supporting independent journalism and your commitment to upholding the First Amendment."
And Rubio didn’t disappoint in his first major public statement as America’s top diplomat. When asked about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s hot mic moment—where Trudeau was caught admitting that “absorbing Canada is a real thing”—Rubio didn’t deny it. Instead, he revealed the exact moment the idea was sparked by President Trump.
Herridge pressed him on the issue:
HERRIDGE: “In a hot mic moment, Canada’s prime minister said that absorbing Canada ‘is a real thing.’ Is it a real thing?”
Rubio, in classic no-nonsense style, confirmed that yes, it is absolutely a real thing—and he explained how it all started:
SECRETARY RUBIO: “Yeah, look, you know how that came about? President’s meeting with Trudeau and Trudeau says, well, if you impose—if you even out our trade relationship, then we will cease to exist as a country, at which point the President responded very logically, and that is, well, if you can’t exist without cheating in trade, then you should become a state. That was his observation there.”
Boom. That’s how it all started.
EXCLUSIVE: @SecRubio on Canada, 51st State and the Hot Mic Moment

In one simple, no-nonsense moment, Trump cut through the usual diplomatic doublespeak and got to the heart of the issue. Trudeau, in his usual weak and whiny way, essentially admitted that Canada only survives because of its unfair trade practices. Instead of getting rattled or retreating, Trump did what any pragmatic leader would do—he pointed out the obvious:
If your country can’t survive without cheating its biggest trade partner, maybe you shouldn’t be a country at all.
And just like that, a conversation that would have been unthinkable under past administrations was now on the table.
Trump’s approach to foreign policy has always been about strength, fairness, and putting America first. For decades, career politicians have let countries like Canada take advantage of the United States through bad trade deals and lopsided partnerships. Instead of continuing to let it slide, Trump called out the hypocrisy and presented a real solution.
The idea of Canada becoming the 51st state isn’t just about trade, though that’s certainly a big part of it. It’s about bringing stability, economic opportunity, and security to a region that has been poorly managed by weak leadership for too long. Canada has vast natural resources, strategic geographic positioning, and a population that overwhelmingly shares American values—all things that would make it a strong addition to the United States.
Of course, the globalists and the mainstream media will clutch their pearls at this idea, just like they did when Trump first announced his candidacy in 2015. But the reality is, Trump has a proven track record of getting things done that the so-called “experts” said were impossible.
They said he couldn’t win in 2016. They said he couldn’t fix the economy. They said he couldn’t bring peace to the Middle East. They said he couldn’t return to office. And yet, here we are.
Now, those same “experts” are scoffing at the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state, but as we’ve seen time and time again, Trump has a way of making things happen when others fail.
The fact that Trudeau himself acknowledged this as a “real thing” should tell you all you need to know. Deep down, even he knows that under his leadership, Canada is failing—and that Trump’s America is the better deal.
This moment also highlights just how strategically sharp Trump is when it comes to negotiations. He wasn’t sitting in a backroom plotting to absorb Canada—he was simply reacting logically to the facts in front of him. That’s what real leadership looks like. That’s what common sense foreign policy looks like.
And let’s not forget Rubio’s role in all this. His first big interview as Secretary of State wasn’t with some scripted, corporate-controlled media outlet—it was with Catherine Herridge, a real journalist committed to reporting the truth. This administration understands the importance of supporting free and independent media, something we at the American Realist appreciate as well. And if you’d like to help us fight back against mainstream media propaganda, consider supporting our reporting for only $3/month. It would mean the world to us!
At the end of the day, Trump is doing what he does best—thinking outside the box, making bold moves, and putting America in the strongest possible position. Whether Canada actually becomes the 51st state remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Trump is once again changing the conversation and shaking up the status quo in a way that only he can.
And for that, America wins.
