Willing to take tariffs off “in the next minute”
It’s always amusing when critics say President Trump doesn’t understand global trade. For years, the media, Democrats, and even some establishment Republicans mocked his tough-talking, America First approach to tariffs as reckless or outdated. But as it turns out—just like with immigration, energy, and foreign policy—Trump’s instincts were right all along. And now, we have proof. Canada is already blinking.
In a stunning development, Ontario Premier Doug Ford just went on CNBC and all but waved the white flag, signaling that Canada is prepared to drop all tariffs if the U.S. does the same.
“We’d be willing to take those off tomorrow,” Ford said. “He (Trump) knows… we’re going to take these tariffs off in the next minute if he said he’s taking their tariffs off.”

Read that again. After all the noise, the posturing, the “we won’t back down” rhetoric coming from Canadian leadership over the years, they’re now openly admitting Trump has the upper hand. It’s a massive shift, and it proves what America First conservatives have known from day one: Trump’s tough-on-trade strategy isn’t chaos—it’s calculated. And it’s working.
Remember the pearl-clutching from the media when Trump first introduced tariffs? Remember the headlines? “Trade war!” “Disaster!” “Economic suicide!” They told us Trump didn’t understand global markets, that tariffs would ruin relationships with our allies, that the world would turn its back on the U.S. Instead, what actually happened was Trump flipped the entire global trade establishment on its head, exposed the weak points in their economies, and forced foreign governments to come to the table—on our terms.
Doug Ford’s comments are just the latest proof. Canada, a country that for years has benefited from imbalanced trade with the U.S., is now essentially saying, “Let’s do zero tariffs across the board.” Why? Because they know they can’t win a trade war with the United States—not with Trump at the helm. They know that Trump’s America First policy is reshaping global trade by returning leverage to the American worker and manufacturing base.
And here’s the genius part of Trump’s strategy: zero tariffs have always been the goal. Not protectionism for protectionism’s sake, but leverage—to force fair trade from countries that have gotten a free ride off American generosity for decades. Tariffs aren’t the endgame—they’re the bargaining chip. And now, the global community is starting to blink.
If Canada is already preparing to drop all tariffs, how long before other nations fall in line? The European Union? Japan? Even China? If they’re serious about keeping access to the U.S. market—and let’s be honest, they all are—they’ll have no choice but to follow suit. Trump’s position has always been simple: the U.S. will trade with anyone, but it must be on equal footing. No more sweetheart deals, no more trade deficits that suck jobs out of the Midwest and funnel wealth overseas.
Ford’s statement is significant because it doesn’t come from some anonymous official or some bureaucrat in a backroom negotiation. This is a public, on-the-record admission on national television that Trump’s strategy is winning. For all the flak he’s taken over the years—from Democrats, the media, and even establishment Republicans—Trump has stood firm in his belief that America should no longer be the world’s economic punching bag. And now we’re seeing the results.
You don’t have to be a trade expert to understand what’s happening here. When the leader of Canada’s largest province says they’re ready to tear down all tariffs immediately, you know the wind is shifting. Canada is essentially begging for parity now—hoping that by offering a quick retreat, they can avoid deeper economic consequences.
Of course, don’t expect the media to give Trump any credit for this. They’ll twist themselves into knots trying to say this was inevitable, or that Ford doesn’t speak for all of Canada. But the reality is impossible to deny: Trump’s hard-nosed approach to trade is getting real-world results. For decades, American leaders have been too timid or too captured by globalist interests to push back against unfair trade. Trump changed that—and now the rest of the world is adjusting to the new reality.
And what would a zero percent tariff world actually look like under Trump’s terms? It would mean true free trade, not the one-sided arrangements of the past. It would mean American companies competing on a level playing field, not burdened by foreign taxes while our markets are flooded with cheap imports. It would mean a revitalized manufacturing base, stronger wages, and more jobs for American workers. That’s not just smart policy—that’s common sense.
So yes, if this is Trump’s master plan, it’s already working. The bluff has been called, and Canada blinked. Now it’s time for the rest of the world to follow. Because under President Trump, the message is simple: America will trade with you—but only if it’s fair. And if it takes tough talk and a few tariffs to get there, so be it. That’s what leadership looks like.
